The Department for the Control of the Trade in Firearms, Ammunition and Explosives issues a firearm licence (to carry or possess guns) to the law enforcement agencies that are authorised to carry or possess guns.
Because of the nature of their work, the following agencies need to be permanently armed: the Administrative Department of Security (DAS), the National Penitentiary and Prison Institute (INPEC), the Office of the Inspector General and the Office of the Attorney General.
According to the 1st Article of Statutory Decree 1809/94A, they are allowed to carry military-restricted arms, such as assault rifles, and they must renew their gun carry permit every ten years.
