From the military's own baseline estimate of more than 9,000 small arms once held in armouries, Papua New Guinea Defence Force (PNGDF) figures have since shown that:

694 were reported missing in 2004 audit
3,418 surplus weapons were destroyed in 2006
2,300 were held in stock early in 2007
2,596 remain unaccounted for
