CAUTION - Editor's Note:
These figures are likely to undercount fatalities due to long guns. As many US death certificates fail to specify the weapon used, CDC data tables allocate a disproportionately high number of gun suicides to the 'Other and Unspecified' firearm category, as they do with homicide (see Rokaw, Mercy and Smith, 1990).1
For this and other reasons,2 GunPolicy.org cites and compares CDC data for the larger top-level categories (Total Gun Deaths, Gun Homicides), but displays and compares smaller, more accurate FBI tallies3 where these are disaggregated by weapon type (Handgun Homicides, Long Gun Homicides, and Gun Homicides (Other)).
