In the Southern Highlands, non-fatal small-arm-related injury fills a very high proportion of hospital beds. In the years 1998-2004, 3.5 per cent of all in-patients at Mendi Hospital were admitted for treatment of gunshot wounds, yielding a rate of 9.06 per 100,000 population (Muggah and Alpers, 2004).
