In the United Kingdom, one of the conditions printed on the firearm certificate is that the firearm must, at all times, be stored securely 'so as to prevent, so far as is reasonably practicable, access to the firearms or ammunition by an unauthorised person'. The legislation does not impose specific requirements in this regard, although the Home Office has produced guidelines listing options and recommended practices, but emphasizing that it is the responsibility of certificate holders to ensure their compliance with the condition. For example, the guidelines recommend storing ammunition and other removable parts separate from the firearms, adding that, although it is not a requirement of the Firearms Act, it is 'sensible' that they be locked away for security and safety reasons, especially if there are children in the house…
