This case study focuses on Phase I of the Project, which ended in 2001. It gives an overview of small arms availability and trade prior to the renewed outbreak of hostilities, and examines the results of the weapons collection programme.

It provides a global profile of the total number of small arms and light weapons and assesses current proliferation dynamics in the region. Results are tentative. The research team commissioned by the IOM/UNDP had eight weeks to undertake the research.
