ECOWAS

Mauritania joined the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) when it was set up in 1975, but withdrew in 1999. Therefore, it is not involved in the ECOWAS process which, in 1998, turned its Declaration of a Moratorium on the Import, Export and Manufacture of Small Arms and Light Weapons in West Africa into a binding agreement. This measure is one of the greatest advances in the fight against the proliferation of small arms and light weapons in the region.
