Article 62. Possession
All the citizens have the right to possess firearms at home, except in the cases specified by this Law. They must only comply with the requirements described in this Law.
[Editor's note: The right of citizens to possess firearms in Guatemala is reduced to a conditional privilege by restrictions enacted in statute law. For example:
- Gun owners are licensed by the state
- Gun owners must re-apply and re-qualify every one to three years
- Practical tests are required in firearm safety and the law
- Gun ownership for personal security requires government approval
- The minimum age for a hidden handgun carry permit is 25 years
- Background checks include medical records, Army, Police and criminal history
- Possession of ammunition is limited to a maximum of 200-250 rounds
- Each firearm must be registered to its owner by the state
- Legislation specifies safe storage of guns and ammunition]
