Ireland also participated in the negotiations on the Protocol Against the Illicit Manufacturing of and Trafficking in Firearms, Their Parts and Components and Ammunition, supplementing the United Nations Convention Against Transnational Organised Crime (the "Firearms Protocol").
The recently adopted EU Directive amending Directive 91/477/EEC on the control and acquisition of weapons takes account of the provisions of the Firearms Protocol and will help facilitate Ireland's ratification of the Protocol in the near future.
