Italian law enforcement agencies collect data when weapons are stolen and on recovered firearms reported by all police forces across the national territory, and these data are included in the inter-forces database (Sistema d'Indagine, or SDI). The SDI is run by the Criminal Police Central Directorate.

According to the UAMA, Italian national databases contain all the information related to a firearm's recorded movements (stolen, illegally acquired, bought or owned by private individuals, destroyed, seized, removed from depositories, unmarked, etc.), and records are kept for 50 years.
