Organizations in Charge of Firearms Control and Enforcement
In regards to the administrative organization of firearms control, the Prefectural Public Safety Commission is in charge of authorizing possession of firearms. The Minister of Economy and Industry and the prefectural governors are responsible for authorizing manufacture of firearms.
Execution of administrative work on firearms control is conducted by the local police as stipulated in the Police Law. On a national level, the National Police Agency (Firearms Division, Community Safety Bureau) directs and oversees the administrative work required for firearms control.
Criminal investigation concerning violation of firearms control stipulated in the Firearms and Swords Control Law and the Ordnance Manufacture Law is conducted by the police. Crackdown on the smuggling of firearms is conducted by Customs, because smuggling is in violation of the Customs Law. This collaborated effort has been effective against the smuggling of firearms.
