Regulation on Ammunition

Ammunition used in firearms is controlled by the Explosives Control Law. Transfer of ownership, import and use of ammunition requires permission from the Prefectural Public Safety Commission (manufacturers and sales agents of explosives from the prefectural governor). Those who are legal firearm owners can possess ammunition.

Manufacture or sale of ammunition requires permission from the Minister of Economy and Industry or the prefectural governor as stipulated in the Explosives Control Law and the Ordnance Manufacturing Law.

Possession, import, transfer and acquisition of handgun ammunition are prohibited with few exceptions by the Firearms and Swords Control Law.
