Relevant contents

During the 2000s, knives have been used in an average of just over 40 percent of all cases of lethal violence. Knife has been the dominant method of violence in lethal violence in Sweden since the 1970s and there is a clear connection between these crimes and alcohol intoxication.

In recent years, however, firearms have become increasingly common in lethal violence. Firearms were used in 39 percent of the reported cases of lethal violence in 2020, which was slightly lower compared to 2019 when the corresponding proportion was 41 percent. The fact that the proportion has decreased despite a numerical increase in cases where firearms have been used is due to the fact that the number of cases of lethal violence where firearms have not been used has increased to a greater extent.

However, the proportion of cases of fatal violence where firearms have been used has almost doubled since 2011 , from 21 to 39 per cent in 2020.

Lethal Violence Using Firearms

- Firearms were used in 39 percent of the reported cases of lethal violence in 2020. The proportion of reported cases of lethal violence where firearms were used has largely doubled (from 21 to 39%) since 2011.
- In 85 percent of the cases where firearms were used in 2020, the victim was a man or a boy and in 15 percent a woman or girl.
