Note 4.6.6.
Prior to 2012-13, Lothian and Borders Police included incidents within their recorded crime and offences involving a firearm data return which indicated a possible firearm had been used, for example; smashing window by firing air pellet or similar at glass. This was recognized as inaccurate recording and instruction was given to the effect that where there was no evidence to substantiate a firearm had been used i.e. crime witnessed, bullet found etc., the report would not be tagged with a firearms marker. This will account for some of the decrease in the number of firearm offences recorded by Lothian and Borders Police in 2012-13 compared to previous years.
