The analysis conducted in Gauteng revealed that from a sample of 1,933 cases, in 1,157 of the cases (59,9%) pistols or revolvers were the types of firearms confiscated. In 704 of the cases (36,4%) ammunition was recovered. Shotguns were recovered in 44 cases (2,3%) and high calibre guns recovered in 22 cases (3,4%).
Similarly, KwaZulu-Natal indicated that pistols or revolvers were confiscated in 1,670 of the cases (44,7%), followed by the recovery of ammunition (1,342 cases or 35,9%) from a sample of 3 736 cases. High calibre firearms were recovered in 96 of the cases (2,6%), as well as 96 shotguns (2,6%) were recovered followed by 70 homemade firearms (1,9%).
The analysis conducted in Mpumalanga revealed that in 311 of the cases (44,5%) pistols or revolvers were the types of firearms confiscated in a sample of 699 cases. In 259 of the cases (37,1%) ammunition was recovered. High calibre guns were recovered in 98 cases (14,0%), followed by shotguns (28 or 4,0%) and homemade guns (3 or 0,4%).
The analysis of 578 sampled cases in Limpopo revealed that in 347 of the cases (60,0%) pistols or revolvers were confiscated; in 176 cases (30,4%) ammunition; in 27 cases (4,7%) shotguns; in 26 cases (4,5%) high calibre firearms and in two cases (0,3%) homemade firearms.
The analysis of 357 sampled cases in the Free State revealed that in 199 of the cases (52,9%) pistols or revolvers were confiscated; in 153 cases (40,7%) ammunition; in 15 cases (4,0%) shotguns; in six cases (1,6%) high calibre firearms and in two cases (0,5%) homemade firearms. Explosives were also confiscated in one case (0,3%).
In the analysis conducted in the Western Cape it was revealed that from a sample of 2,988 cases, ammunition contributed to 57% (1703 cases) and firearms 43% (1,285) to the total number of cases analysed. Of the firearms 1,215 (94,6%) were pistols and revolvers; 26 (2%) shotguns; 24 (1,9%) homemade firearms and 20 (1,6%) high calibre firearms.
