Statistics on mortality from external causes - consisting of homicides, suicides, traffic events and events of an unintentional nature - has as its source of data a) the National Police through the Police Operations and Strategy Centre (COEPOL) for its greater coverage in the national territory; b) the General Directorate of Forensic Medicine, which provides information on injuries, with specific views on sexual assault and abuses toward minors and women; and c) the National Directorate of Criminal Investigation for criminal incidence data.

The analysis of the characteristics of events disaggregated by time, person and place, as well as the nature of events, is completed with rates by age group and georeferencing, using population projections from INE (National Statistics Institute). Furthermore, in order to support a better interpretation of the context surrounding the events, a complementary analytical and descriptive exercise is carried out using the information published daily by the written, radio, television and digital media of Honduras as a reference.

It is expected that this approach to the phenomenon from the magnitude and characterization of the facts, will contribute to a better understanding of reality so that government authorities, protection sectors, academia, civil society, media and population in general, have evidence-based information that allow them to make decisions, to promote the formulation of strategies, policies and also evaluate their relevance and sustainability, with a view to reducing the impacts of crime on human development in Honduras.
