The Weapons Act 1990 (QLD), which requires owners of long arms (rifles and shotguns) to be licensed, took effect in Queensland on 1 January 1992.

To purchase long arms, unlicensed people must apply to the police. The application cannot be processed for 28 days - the "cooling-off period" - and applicants must also sit a safety test.
