Insights into the total number of civilian firearms in the Philippines came through a new Philippine government report on firearms licensing and gun ownership (Philippine National Police, 2001). This establishes that at the end of 1999 there were 706,148 privately owned firearms registered in the country, a figure growing at a rate of 10-15 per cent annually. In addition there were 329,985 'loose' or unregistered guns.
