Artículo 24. Registro de Tenencia

El registro de la tenencia de armas de fuego lo hará personalmente el interesado en la DIGECAM, presentando el o las armas que pretenda registrar con la factura que ampara su propiedad o testimonio de la escritura de compraventa.

El interesado deberá proporcionar dos (2) municiones con el objeto de tomar las huellas balísticas del arma. Los proyectiles y las vainas o casquillos pasarán a formar parte del archivo de datos balísticos de la DIGECAM.

La DIGECAM, extenderá al interesado la tarjeta de tenencia, la cual indicará: nombre, residencia y domicilio del interesado, nacionalidad, número de documento de identificación personal, indicación de la marca del arma, modelo, calibre, número de serie, largo del cañón o cañones y conversiones de calibres que tuviere, así como lugar y fecha de registro.

Si el interesado no pudiere asistir personalmente, podrá hacerlo por medio de un mandatario especial con representación de conformidad con la ley, facultado para cumplir con todos los requisitos establecidos en la Ley de Armas y Municiones.

Las armas registradas serán marcadas con la denominación GUA con el consentimiento y a costa del propietario. Marcaje que representa que el arma esta registrada en el Estado de Guatemala.

Las únicas conversiones en armas de fuego que la Ley de Armas y Municiones permite es la de calibres, no así modificar un arma de fuego para que cambie de clasificación. Conversión de calibre que debe ser registrada ante la DIGECAM para la obtención de la huella balística y la anotación en la tarjeta de tenencia de arma de fuego.

Las armas de fuego que ingresen temporalmente al territorio nacional con autorización de la DIGECAM, cuando su permanencia supere sesenta (60) días, se deberá realizar ante la DIGECAM un trámite de registro temporal, debiéndose obtener la huella balística del arma de fuego y se extenderá una tarjeta de tenencia temporal.

Article 24. Registration of Possession

Firearm possession registration shall be conducted by DIGECAM after presenting the firearm or firearms that are intended for registration with the invoice that protects their property or a written testimony of the purchase.

The interested party must provide two (2) bullets in order to conduct ballistic fingerprinting of the firearm. The shells or caps shall become part of the DIGECAM ballistic archive.

DIGECAM shall provide the applicant with a firearm possession licence that indicates the following: name, residence and address of the interested party, nationality, number of the personal identification document, information stating the firearm's brand, model, calibre, serial number, length of the barrel or barrels, calibre conversions and information on the date and place of registration.

If the applicant is unable to personally attend, he may do so through a specially mandated representative in accordance with the law, authorised to comply with all requirements set in the Firearms and Ammunition Act.

Registered firearms shall be marked with the letters GUA with the consent and at the expense of the owner. These marks show that the firearm is registered in Guatemala.

The only firearm modifications that the Firearms and Ammunition Act allows are calibre modifications, but this should not allow a change to its classification. All calibre conversions must be registered with DIGECAM in order to obtain ballistic prints and must be recorded in the firearm possession licence.

Firearms that temporarily enter the country must be temporarily registered with DIGECAM when their stay exceeds a period of sixty (60) days. A ballistic fingerprint of the firearm and a temporary firearm possession licence shall be provided.
