Portugal Breaks Records in the Seizure of Weapons and Explosives in 2018

In 2018 alone, the Public Security Police (PSP) seized 8,979 weapons, 200% more compared to 2014 figures and an average of 25 weapons seized per day. In the case of ammunition, the numbers increased 23%, from 71,121 to 87,839, reaching record levels, reports Diário de Notícias (DN). The districts where there were more seizures were Lisbon, Braga, Setúbal and Leiria.

Hunting weapons accounted for the largest share of the seized weapons (40%), followed by prohibited calibre weapons - the so-called 'weapons of war' or weapons for the exclusive use of security and military forces - with 38%. There were also 935 self-defence weapons seized, accounting for 10% of the total seizures.
