Hundreds of Homemade Rifles Off the Streets

Police in Preah Vihear province have collected 378 homemade rifles since launching a gun amnesty at the start of the year.

Deputy provincial police chief Colonel Sam Sameoun said officers had spoken to people in the area to educate them about illegal weapon possession, warning that homemade guns often malfunction, injuring or killing their owners.

Following the outreach work, he said officers managed to convince many residents to hand in their homemade rifles, which were often used to kill endangered animals.

Col Sameoun said, "We collected 378 homemade rifles that were used with ball-bearing bullets for hunting wild animals. Some were handed in by villagers after police educated them about how illegal gun possession harms public security.

"The rifles do not only pose a threat to humans and animals, but are also illegal."

Col Sameoun said local authorities were concerned about people keeping guns and resorting to using them in disputes.
