In Samoa, an official inquiry looked into allegations that in November 2008, police officers smuggled guns into the country from neighbouring American Samoa on the police patrol boat MV Nafanua.
In a press release from Samoa's Office of the Attorney General, Police Commissioner Papalii Lorenese Neru stated that he received a package from former American Samoa Police Captain Papalii Marion Fitisemanu. When he discovered the package contained firearms, the Commissioner was 'shocked.' Former Police Captain Fitisemanu was fined $1,000 by the High Court.
