Police, Gun Dealers Eager for Amnesty

An amnesty for owners of unregistered and unwanted firearms has begun and will continue for the next seven months.

State Police Minister Tony Piccolo said… "In a first for South Australia, participating firearms dealers will play a significant role in the amnesty, with people able to surrender firearms at participating licensed dealers," Mr Piccolo said.

'More than 45 dealers will join with SAPOL to receive surrendered firearms.

"Furthermore, the Firearms Bill 2015 includes a provision for a permanent amnesty, which will commence at the conclusion of this amnesty period if the Bill passes Parliament this week."…

In the last firearms amnesty between August and October 2012, there were 3162 firearms surrendered to police…

"In the last three financial years (2013/14, 2014/15 and 2015/16 YTD) 670 firearms were reported stolen in South Australia," he said.

"Of those, more than 55 per cent were stolen from people living in rural areas."…
