It is illegal to possess an unregistered firearm in Chile and, although certain semi-automatic weapons are permitted if registered, machine guns are illegal altogether.

The process to register a gun is known to be extensive and includes psychiatric background checks, proof against malicious intent and the passing of an exam on the weapon's proper use.

Roberto Ziegele, director of the Defence Ministry's Directorate of National Mobilization (DGMN), in charge of gun control, said that gun laws in Chile are renowned for their strictness.

"An M16 is a prohibited gun in Chile, and no one would be able to register any gun of this kind," Ziegele told The Santiago Times. "These guns should not be in Chile, they are completely illegal."
