Laikipia Violence Linked to Illegal Arms

The recent spate of violence in Laikipia District could be attributed to the proliferation of illegal arms in the region.
Laikipia is bordered by Baringo and Samburu districts, which are thought to have up to 25,000 small arms being held illegally.
In a book titled Terrorised Citizens by a retired Air Force officer and two university dons, Samburu is suspected to have 16,000 guns in the wrong hands with Baringo having about 7,000.
Profiles insecurity
The 2003 book by Lieutenant Colonel Jacob Kamenju, who is also a director with the Nairobi-based Security Research and Information Centre, and Moi University dons Francis Wairagu and Mwachofi Singo, profiles small arms and insecurity in the North Rift region.
The book says there are a total of 127,000 illegal arms in the North Rift districts of Turkana, Samburu, West Pokot, Baringo and Marakwet.
However, the Marakwet figure is being doubted owing to the raids that existed for many years between the community and their West Pokot and East Baringo neighbours…
