Ethiopia Burns 7,000 Guns as Region Fights Illegal Small Arms

…The executive secretary of the Regional Centre on Small Arms (Recsa) Francis Sang told The EastAfrican that after harmonisation of laws on firearms in all the 12 members of the Centre, the stage is now set for activities that could see the number of arms in civilian hands substantially reduced by 2011.

The Participating countries are Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Congo, Rwanda, Burundi, Ethiopia, Eritrea, Sudan, Somalia, Seychelles and Djibouti. …

In the first phase of the programme, some 58,000 guns were destroyed in Kenya, 12,000 in Tanzania and 7,500 in Uganda and 200 in Seychelles…
