Serbians Giving Up Small Arms

An increasing number of Serbian citizens are giving up their personal firearms because of high taxes on them.

The Serbian police has a total of 1,103,000 personal firearms registered. The state earns some nine million Euro in taxes on those weapons.

The Serbian police has 514,870 registered pistols and revolvers. A total of 1,557 people have permits to carry their weapons while the rest have permits to own firearms. Of the total, 10% are revolvers…

According to police data, 17,000 people applied for permission to own weapons in 2004 and 11,776 permits were issued. A total of 4,974 permits were issued for revolvers and pistols while the rest were hunting weapons.

There are 454,650 hunting rifles, carbines and shotguns in Serbia and added that annual taxes are not paid on those weapons.

There are some 97,000 sports weapons registered including small-caliber and air pistols and rifles, bows and crossbows.

The Serbian police said that state institutions, companies and security agencies have 36,500 automatic and semi-automatic rifles and other long-barrel weapons.
